What Is Threads? And Is It The Real Competitor Of Twitter?

On July 5th, 2023 meta officially released Instagram’s sister app called Threads. Designed as a platform for real time conversations and sharing, threads has been officially seen to be the competitor of twitter since its release. The main objective for threads it to create public threads also known as microblogging. Since the launch, it has been reported within the first 5 days there has been a growing number of 100 million users active on the new app. On the day of Threads’ launch, twitter fired back claiming Meta is infringing on twitters intellectual property rights. Meta has been accused of having employees who once worked for twitter, thus implying the company had access to confidential information and trade secrets. Metas CEO Zuckerberg responded to the allegations and denied them.
Threads V.S Twitter
Threads allows its users to create posts consisting of up to 500 characters or 5 minutes of video content where as Twitter allows up to 280 characters of text and around 2 minute videos. Threads currently lacks features such as hashtags, trending stories, and direct messaging. There has been talks from the developers of threads, that claim they will make several updates to the app such as a news feed, edit posts, translation into multiple languages and an improved user interface for switching between different Threads accounts.
Since the launch of threads many users agree it might prove to be a platform where folks are kind, thoughtful, don't feel encouraged to be mean, aggressive or hostile. As a user of both platforms I can confirm that twitters atmosphere has always been pretty toxic and infamous for its cancel culture. Controversial discussions are not able to be held, and many feel threads may be the first app to change that. Meta themselves originally pitched Threads as a less political version of Twitter, but it’s not clear how the company will maintain that atmosphere.
